British American Tobacco Malaysia - BAT Malaysia welcomes Government’s additional move to address revenue leakages from cigarette smuggling

British American Tobacco (Malaysia) Berhad (BAT Malaysia) said that the Government’s Budget 2023 announcement today that saw additional measures being announced to address cigarette smuggling is a step in the right direction.

Earlier, the Minister of Finance said that the Government remains committed to address revenue leakages from cigarette smuggling and announced to tighten controls on importation of cigarettes with introduction of Single-Entry Point policy in the northern region as well as enhancing controls at landing points including private jetties. In addition, the Minister of Finance also announced special rewards scheme for enforcement to stop smuggling activities.

BAT Malaysia believes this move will further strengthen efforts in combatting the tobacco black market which is still persistently high where 56.1% of cigarettes sold in Malaysia are tax-evaded products. This will help to address revenue leakages where currently the loss stands at RM5 billion annually.
